Our First Week Together

Well...we made it!! It was an interesting, special week, and we all got through it together! It's hard to believe that when I started this blog, I planned to document our adoption journey, and thought that we would be getting our referral about now. Instead, I am writing about the first week our beautiful son is at home with us. You just never know what path life will take you on!

Unfortunately, everyone came down with a nasty flu virus this week. I'll spare you the details, but it was very messy, and in the end, I had a sinus infection and Spike has an ear infection. Luckily, we're both on antibiotics (including Andy), and everyone is feeling much better. Even though he hasn't been feeling well, Spike continues to smile and laugh more and more every day. We lifted our visitor ban, and both sets of grandparents made it over this weekend. While they were here, Spike would constantly check to see where Andy and I were (usually about 6 inches away from where he was), which is a great sign that he recognizes us as his primary caregivers.

Spike also loves Monkey, which has been interesting. Monkey is having a bit of a hard time adjusting to a little brother who wants to be everywhere he is, and play with whatever he has. Monkey is usually a happy, laidback little guy. He's had some tantrums, and likes to tell Spike to "Go away baby brother" or "That's mine!" He's happiest when Spike is safely contained in his exersaucer! But at the same time he will go up to Spike out of the blue and give him a hug or a pat on the back. Every day has gotten a little better though, and I know in time he will love his little brother as much as we do.

The nights have been a challenge for Spike. This is when he does most of his grieving, plus he hasn't been feeling well. He wants to be held the majority of the nights. Don't get me wrong, I am treasuring the chance to cuddle with him, and I know it's helping us bond...I'm just tired:). I keep telling myself that when he's a teenager I'll wish for these days! Right now we have two mattresses (one for him, one for us) in his room and we are planning on co-sleeping when he lets us.

I am really enjoying being the mommy of two boys. By the way...did I mention that Spike only weighs two pounds less than Monkey!?!?!? I may never have to work out again. Tomorrow Andy goes back to work, so wish me luck. I'm so excited to have the little guys to myself for an entire day:).

So happy to hear this update!
That stinks that you've been sick, but happy that you're all on the mend.
I'm glad that Spike (and Monkey) are adjusting well....I'll be thinking of you on your first day alone with your two little boys!

So sorry to hear that you have all been sick! Its so hard to handle 2 kids when you are tired, hopefully everyone is on the mend and you can start getting a bit more sleep.

The adjustment is hard at times, but before you know it, Spike will be doing better at night and Monkey will get used to having a little brother tagging along w/him. I hope your 1st week home alone goes well!

Wow your post brought back memories (and it's only been 3 months!). The adjustment time can be hard at times for everyone(plus when you're sick!). It sounds like Spike is doing so well! Good luck with being home alone with your 2 little guys! Thank you for the update!

So fun to read about your boys. Our adopted baby(no referral yet) will probably be about the same difference in age from our youngest as Spike is from Monkey. It's been interesting to see how the adjustment is going for Monkey, since our son will be making the same adjustment.
