Okay...I really wasn't going to do this. I really wanted to keep my political views out of this blog, but after the last few days I am moved to write about this amazing time in our country's history.
This isn't so much a post about Barack Obama, but what his election stands for. In school, I teach a lesson called "Show Don't Tell" when teaching writing. I believe America embodied this concept when we elected a multiracial president who's message is change. Our country showed the world that we are open-minded and believe in impossible dreams, and that in the face of economic hardship and time of war, we are hopeful.
As I think of my two sons, one who is half a world away, living next to a country that stifles individual choice and demoncracy, I am thankful for the message that they will have learned from this election. I hope for them to grow up in a country that believes anything is possible, and we are free to make choices. I hope that they will learn that not everyone makes judgements based on skin color, religion, sexual orientation, or gender, and that they will lead by example. I hope that I will be able to "show not tell" these same ideals.
I hope...

Regardless of whether or not you support President Obama's politics, his election is major moment in our country's history and one I am proud to be part of.
As a transracial family, I am so happy my children will grow up knowing that the color of their skin does not have to limit their dreams.
